2012 Hurricane Season

2012 Hurricane Season

With Hurricane Season starting in 11 days, there is already a tropical storm in the Atlantic. Tropical Storm Alberto hovered off the South Carolina and Georgia coasts on Sunday, producing showers and serving as a reminder that the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season is just around the corner.

The first storm of the season was not expected to approach landfall on the Carolinas' coast, but it prompted a brief tropical storm watch and forecasters warned that it could produce high winds, heavy surf, rip currents and scattered rain across the region. The hurricane season officially begins June 1 and ends November 30th.

Hurricane Tips

NOAA will issue its 2012 Atlantic Hurricane Outlook on Thursday, May 24th. In 2011 there was a 70% chance of an above average hurricane season forecast . Please keep their website handy for current hurricane information. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov

In preparing for the Hurricane Season, make the following plans for action:

Know the hurricane risks in your area. Learn the storm surge history and elevation of your area.

Learn safe routes inland.

Learn the location of official shelters.

Prepare a plan for your family and loved ones in advance of hazardous weather.

Ensure that enough non-perishable food and water supplies are on hand.

Have at least a one week supply of medications on hand.

Obtain and store materials, such as plywood, necessary to properly secure your home.

Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts.

Keep trees and shrubbery trimmed of dead wood.

Review your insurance policy.

Determine where to move your boat in an emergency.

Make plans now on what to do with your pets should you be required to evacuate your residence. Public health regulations do not allow pets in public shelters, nor do most hotels/motels.

Individuals with special needs or others requiring more information should contact their County Emergency Management Office.

The objective of this position is to provide sales and project management services with value-added benefits to the company. The Sales / Project Manager needs to be a self-starter who is able to multitask effectively. The position requires a proven ability to effectively communicate with external and internal customers. Strong math skills and an ability to pay close attention to detail is essential. Main responsibilities include environmental sales, scheduling incoming jobs, customer communication, as well as other related support duties as required.

Qualifications:

Previous environmental sales experience is required
Have a working knowledge of environmental industry rules and regulations is required
Five or more years of sales experience is preferred
Hazardous waste experience preferred
Certified Hazardous Material Manager certification is preferred
Bachelor’s Degree is preferred
Proven ability to communicate effectively with confidence, both verbal and written
Strong organizational and customer service skills
Strong math skills with ability to calculate figures and amounts
Expertise in MS Products (Word, Excel, etc.) and Internet business usage
Have an employment record of stability, honesty, reliability and integrity

Division Administrator

Position Objective:

The Division Administrator needs to be a self-starter who is able to multitask effectively. The position requires a proven ability to effectively communicate with external and internal customers. Main responsibilities include scheduling incoming jobs, maintaining division documents / databases, customer communication, managing division reports, as well as other related support duties as required.

Essential Functions of Position:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Customer Phone Contact
Assists General Manager & customers with document completion & scheduling of incoming material
Assists in preparing quotes for sales personnel
Prepares / distributes pre & post samples to laboratory
Prepare manifests, labels, & weight tickets for vehicles as required
Tracks / maintains division analyticals
Match division incoming manifests & weight tickets to approved documents
Prepares certificates of acceptance / treatment
Maintains division databases & spreadsheets
Prepares weekly / monthly division calendar for meetings
Gathers / submits information for emissions test book & FDEP inspections
Assists General Manager with reports
Prepares / assembles billing sheets for division & salespersons
Content Management filing
Interact with other business departments; communicate & work directly with various business managers and staff to ensure useful & timely reporting of information
Assists with other Division administrators when needed
Assists with special projects as required
Provide suggestions to management & supervisor on ways to implement efficiencies with daily processing & reporting activities
Evaluate, document and implement department policies
Sign in vehicles and keeps daily running spreadsheet total of trucks / incoming material
Other special assignments & ad hoc projects as required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Microsoft products: Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.
Database experience
PC skills
Internet usage for business
10-key adding machine / calculator

Qualifications:

Proven ability to communicate effectively with confidence, both verbal and written
Strong organizational and customer service skills
Associate’s Degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school preferred
Two or more years of related experience and/or training
Strong math skills with ability to calculate figures and amounts
Expertise in MS Products (Word, Excel, etc.) and Internet business usage

February News: Florida Petroleum Cleanup Program

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection announces a public meeting on the Petroleum Cleanup Program.

Date & Time:

February 15, 2012, 1:00p.m. - 5:00p.m. & February 16, 2012, 8:30 a.m. -1:00 p.m.

A general update on the Bureau of Petroleum Storage Systems will be held including updates on performance based cleanup (PBC), "preapproval" standard operating procedures (SOP), and a screening procedure to perform limited assessment on all eligible sites that have not yet received an SRCO.

The Florida House passed its General Appropriations Act (GAA) -- HB 5001 -- which includes $118 million in cleanup funding. Next up, the Senate will vote on SPB 7050.

Clark Gives Back to the Community

One of the great joys of owning a business is being able to give back to the community in which we work. There are three wonderfully worthy organizations in Mulberry to which CLARK recently made donations. These organizations help out kids, teenagers, families in need, and senior citizens in the Mulberry area. Donations were given to Mike Borders, Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Mulberry; Ron Carpenter and Mark Rippy for the Christmas Toy Run; and Carol Davis, Director of the Mulberry Community Service Center. During this past year, CLARK also made donations to the Mulberry Phosphate Museum, the Mulberry Library, and the Mulberry Chamber of Commerce.

MULBERRY - If you hate to get up and go to work in the morning, you're probably not working at Clark Environmental in Mulberry. It is one of two Polk County businesses named by "Florida Trend Magazine" as one of the state's top 100 Best Places to Work.

The list comes out in the August issue.

"I have been in companies before, when you walk in, it's just a job," Vice President Jim Clark told FOX 13 on Friday. "We try to make everyone feel like it's not a job. It's family. It's fun."

Employees get a gift and cake on their birthday. On their anniversary, they get money for every year they have been at the company.

There is a Christmas party, monthly parties, bonuses, and rewards when an employee comes up with a good idea.

"I told them when I started, you'll have to throw me over the fence and I am gonna crawl back over if they try to get rid of me," said Ramona Cohen, who was hired a year ago for accounting work. "It is the most fabulous place to work."

But it's not just a good time. Clark has increased its business by ten fold in the last four years.

President Beth Clark says the most important part of the company's culture is that it values its employees and their opinions.

"We absolutely don't know everything," she said. "We rely on employees to give input, she said.

Clark is not the only Polk business to make the Best Places to Work list. So did ACT Environmental Services and Infrastructure, for the second year running.

BARTOW, Fla. - If you're looking for happy employees, try Polk County on for size. A-C-T Environmental and Infrastructure in Bartow and Clark Environmental in Mulberry both were named in the August issue of Florida Trend magazine as being among the best companies to work for in the state.

A-C-T was named in the mid-sized category, while Clark made the small category list. Neither company has ever had layoffs.

A few miles west of A-C-T on state road 60 in Mulberry lies another one of Florida's best companies, Clark Environmental. It's a thermal treatment and waste processing facility. Family atmosphere is a big selling point along with the employees receiving birthday parties, luncheons and paid anniversaries. President Beth Clark also endorses "safety bingo". Each employee receives a bingo card at the beginning of the month, and every time they get a safety question right, they get a chip, with the winner earning a $25 gift card.

"I'm a firm believer that if you're happy in your workplace, you're going to be more productive", Clark said. "And we all spend way too much time at work as it is. So why come to work and be miserable, so we try to have fun here too".

"I don't think I've ever worked anywhere that people respected you the way they do here", said accounts payable clerk Cristy Caswell. "You don't feel like you're less of a person because of your job title here. Everybody is just on an equal playing field".

CLARK Supports Law Enforcement and MADD at Local Checkpoint

During Labor Day weekend 10 kids and 4 adults with M.A.D.D. group participated in a DUI checkpoint off Hwy 60 in Mulberry. Clark bought pizza and cookies for all the highway patrol/officers that participated! In a 3-1/2 hour time span there were 80 vehicles and/or semi trucks pulled over for numerous reasons, including seatbelt, light, placard, and tire tread violations just to name a few. Around 12AM, they arrested 1 individual for DUI. Overall, this was a life lesson learned for all the kids and adults that were there!
